1728 Gold Cycle — Decline

What happened

In 1728, King Dom João V opened the "Caminho Novo", an alternative route that is safer against pirates, connecting Minas directly to Rio de Janeiro via Petrópolis. Paraty lost its role as a gold warehouse and went into economic hibernation. Without money to demolish and rebuild, colonial architecture remained intact for decades.
