Paraty Foundation
The only city on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro with a practically intact colonial urban layout. The foundation is marked by the overlap of cultures: indigenous, Portuguese and African.
What happened
Before the Portuguese, the Guaianases Indians used the region as a route between the coast and the plateau. From ~1600, colonists began to settle. Around 1640, the "Paratii" nucleus was transferred to its current location, with a donation of land made by Maria Jácome de Mello, who demanded the construction of a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. The official city was founded in 1667.
