UNESCO World Heritage Site — Mixed Site

The only Brazilian and South American asset with simultaneous cultural and natural UNESCO recognition. It places Paraty on the same international level as Venice, Cartagena de Indias and Old Havana.

2019 International Recognition

What happened

In July 2019, Paraty and Ilha Grande received the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site as a mixed site (cultural + natural) — the first in Brazil and South America and the Caribbean in this category. The dossier recognized: colonial architecture, Atlantic Forest, marine biodiversity and living culture of traditional peoples. The official certificate was delivered in 2022.
