Rediscovery and National Listing

Paraty has become a national reference for preservation. The listing prevented the fate of other Brazilian historic centers that were demolished to make way for avenues and buildings.

1954–1966 Heritage & Preservation

What happened

With the opening of BR-101 (Rio-Santos) in 1954, Paraty was rediscovered by artists, writers and hippies. In 1966, IPHAN declared the architectural and urban complex a National Historic Site, preventing demolitions and "modernizations". The 1966 decision ensured that future generations would find the city much as the colonizers left it.
