Pontal Beach

About the beach

Pontal lies just across the Perequê-Açu River from the Historic Center. Its long sandy shore faces the colonial waterfront and surrounding mountains. The water is generally calm and shallow, and kiosks and easy access make it useful for a short visit.

How to get there

Walk from the historic center crossing the bridge over the Perequê-Açu River (~10 min). By bicycle or car. Taxi-boat from Marina Farol de Paraty. Parking on nearby streets.

Sea conditions

Calm, shallow and warm waters. Extensive strip of sand with direct views of the bay and the historic center.

On-site facilities

Kiosks, chair and umbrella rentals, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Boarding point for schooners and boat trips in the bay.

Best time

All year round. High season can get busy.

Check INEA's latest water-quality bulletin and avoid swimming for 24 hours after heavy rain or near drainage channels and river mouths.

Sunset is the main draw, with views toward the colonial waterfront and mountains. Walk the shoreline and check current water quality before swimming. Pack out all trash.

Curiosities

The name comes from the natural geographic formation — a spit of sand created by the meeting of the river with the bay. It is from here that the schooners leave for classic tours around the islands of Paraty Bay.

Best for

Best for a waterfront walk, sunset views, and staying close to the Historic Center. Swimming depends on current water quality, and this is not a substitute for an open-ocean beach.
