Your first trip to Paraty: what to plan before you arrive
A practical order for choosing accommodation, organizing outings, and booking activities that depend on transportation, opening hours, or the weather.
Count the days you will actually have
Before listing attractions, separate full days from arrival and departure time. A weekend with a late arrival and an early departure gives you less sightseeing time than two nights might suggest. Use shorter periods to explore near your accommodation and save longer journeys for a full day.
We suggest choosing one priority per day: the Historic Center and cultural attractions, a boat trip, or an outing by land. Add nearby activities if time allows. This keeps the trip from becoming a series of rushed departures and returns.
Choose accommodation around how you will get around
If you plan to walk a lot, check where your accommodation is in relation to the Historic Center and the services you will use. For a more secluded stay, budget for transportation and work out how you will arrive, go out for dinner, and return from outings.
Ask about access with luggage, parking if needed, stairs, and arrangements for visitors with limited mobility. Historic paving needs care: a central address does not mean every route is level or accessible. Compare accommodation and transportation together, rather than just the nightly rate.
Decide what to book and what to keep flexible
Arrange accommodation and arrival transportation for your travel dates. For boat tours, confirm the proposed route, boarding point, inclusions, and policy for changes due to sea conditions. Keep an alternative on land.
Contact attractions that require reservations before setting out. Fazenda Bananal, for example, states on its official website that visits require advance booking. Opening hours in an old travel account do not mean you can arrive without a reservation.
Check the days cultural venues open. Casa da Cultura lists visits from Tuesday through Saturday. Having Monday free does not mean every museum and exhibition will be open.
Build an itinerary you can rearrange
With three full days, our suggested outline is one day for the Historic Center and exhibitions, one for the bay, and one for a beach area or another experience on land. Arrange the order around opening times, bookings, and the forecast; this is a flexible suggestion.
With only one full day, choose one main experience and a short walk that fits your return time. If beaches are your priority, open the Guide’s listings and compare access before choosing by scenery. Some outings combine a road journey with a trail or boat ride.
Check these details the day before
Review the forecast, opening times, transportation schedules, and messages from operators. Save addresses and booking confirmations for offline access. Tell providers about children in your group or mobility needs.
Bring footwear suited to the outing, protection for your belongings in rain, and water for the journey. When visiting communities, respect residential spaces and ask permission before photographing people. Use the Guide’s Map, Beaches, Trails, and Events sections to refine your choices. Planning should leave you time to enjoy each place.
