Praia Grande
A road-access fishing village with shops, restaurants, and boats to Ilha do Araújo.
- Easy
- BR-101 — ~10 km from the center
- North Corridor
About the beach
Praia Grande is one of the busiest and best-equipped beaches outside central Paraty. The fishing village has shops, restaurants, and kiosks, and boats leave from the pier for nearby islands, especially Ilha do Araújo.
How to get there
Follow BR-101 toward Angra dos Reis for about 10 km and take the clearly marked turnoff. Regular buses from Paraty also stop along BR-101; confirm the current route and schedule.
Sea conditions
The water is generally calm, and the beach has a long, level stretch of sand. Rock formations at either end may offer simple snorkeling when conditions are suitable.
On-site facilities
Restaurants, kiosks, parking, restrooms, and a pier with boats for local trips. Cell service is generally available.
Best time
Open year-round. Weekends are busier, while weekdays are quieter. It is a good choice in any season thanks to its range of visitor facilities.
Safety and advisories
Boat traffic moves through the pier area, so swim away from the channel. Check INEA's latest water-quality bulletin and avoid swimming after heavy rain.
Practical tips
Pair the visit with Prainha, reached by a short trail of about five minutes. Confirm island routes, schedules, and fares directly at the pier. Pack out all trash and do not remove natural materials.
Curiosities
Ilha do Araújo is visible offshore, and birds and capuchin monkeys may be seen in its forested areas. Praia Grande has one of the longest sandy shores in the region with straightforward road access.
Connections

Best for families, road-trippers, and travelers boarding a boat to Ilha do Araújo. It is not suitable for anyone seeking an empty beach or wanting to swim near the pier.
