The Canoe of Thirty

Fishermen along Paraty’s coast tell of an unusually long canoe powered by thirty rowers that appears in the dark and can never be caught.

The legend

During night fishing near Ilha do Araújo, the first sound is a murmur—many people speaking in a language no one recognizes. Then an unusually long canoe appears, with thirty people rowing in perfect rhythm, talking and sometimes singing. Anyone who tries to catch it, whether by paddle or motor, never succeeds. The chase ends at daybreak or when the canoe slips into an opening in the rocks of Ilha Comprida and vanishes.

Versions and context

The account was collected in 2024 near Praia Grande and confirmed by older residents from Ilha do Araújo, Graúna, Paraty-Mirim, and Calhaus. There are also references to the apparition in Saco do Mamanguá. The origin of the enchantment is unknown; assigning it to a particular people without documentation would flatten the range of versions told by local fishermen.
