What the date commemorates
Paraty’s municipal anniversary commemorates the recognition of the autonomy of the former Vila de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Paraty. In 1660, residents erected the pillory and called for separation from Angra dos Reis; a Royal Charter dated February 28, 1667, recognized the autonomy the settlement was already exercising.
In 2026, the official count reached 359 years. The date helps explain the city’s political formation and should not be confused with a single, definitive date for the beginning of settlement, which predates it and is described differently across historical sources.
What happened in 2026
The original program was scheduled for February 27 to March 1, with activities at Areal do Pontal. A municipal call for vendors stated that the festivities would run from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Heavy rains that hit Paraty beginning on February 26 changed those plans. The Official Gazette recorded the cancellation of the celebration scheduled for February 28, as the city prioritized assistance for affected residents and repairs to damaged areas. The original date range therefore should not be presented as a program that took place.
Rescheduled program
A later municipal record once again linked Paraty Anniversary to April 5, 2026, with a performance by DJ Marino Mix. Local press announced performances by Amanda Amado and Belo at Areal do Pontal on the same date, describing the evening as the return of the celebration postponed because of the rains.
Because the available sources consist of administrative records and pre-event announcements, this page does not treat the listed performers as a complete retrospective. The central fact is the calendar change: the civic date remained February 28, while the music program was rescheduled.
