The legend
People say the Mother of Gold has three homes in the Paraty region: Pico do Frade, Pico do Cairuçu, and Toca do Ouro. Every seven years, she moves from one to another with her treasure. She may appear as a radiant woman, a bird, a golden lizard, a beam of light, a fireball, or a shooting star. Anyone who sees where she hides her riches could claim the fortune—but the trails fill with danger and can confuse even seasoned forest guides.
Versions and context
In another version, the Mother of Gold reveals a false treasure to mislead anyone who enters the forest out of greed. The figure belongs to Brazilian folklore, but Paraty’s account gives her a local geography shaped by peaks, caves, and old mountain routes.
