Paraty with kids: choosing outings and planning your day

Plan access, breaks, and the return journey before choosing an attraction. Find out what to ask about boats, cultural venues, and nature activities.

Plan for the child who is traveling

The best choice depends on your child’s age, energy, and routine, as well as the day’s conditions. Instead of looking for a list that suits every family, compare travel time, opportunities to rest, bathrooms, and how easily you can return to your accommodation.

We suggest one main activity per morning or afternoon, with a shorter alternative. An outing involving driving, waiting, and a boat ride can use much of the group’s energy before the visit begins. Avoid combining several stages just to complete a checklist.

Historic Center: a walk with breaks

Choose a few stops and consider the uneven stone paving when deciding whether to bring a stroller. Check the route and venue entrances: a central address does not guarantee continuous access for wheels. Praça da Matriz can be a useful meeting point.

Casa da Cultura offers exhibitions and facilitated visits for schools and groups, subject to booking and availability. For a family visit, check the program and ask which activities suit your children’s ages. Do not assume a children’s workshop runs every day. A short visit with time to look and talk may work better than covering every room.

Boat trips: ask before booking

Tell the operator your children’s ages and ask about suitable life jackets, shade, a bathroom, seating, boarding, and duration. Check whether you can comfortably stay aboard during stops, how people enter the water, and the crew’s rules.

The Brazilian Navy recommends checking passenger capacity, equipment, and life jackets, including children’s sizes. Equipment does not replace supervision by responsible adults. Choose based on the actual boat and arrangements rather than assuming a schooner, speedboat, or private boat is automatically best for every child.

Also check food, water, child fares, and bad-weather policies. Leave plenty of time before any commitment after the tour.

Beaches and nature: access matters too

In Trindade, Praia do Meio, Praia do Caixa d’Aço, and the natural pool involve different access stages, described by ICMBio. Being close together does not mean you should visit them all in one day. Consider the effort of returning as well as getting there.

Check Inea’s bathing-water information and local sea conditions. Shallow or calm-looking water does not guarantee safety. Maintain continuous supervision and follow signs and lifeguards’ guidance where lifeguards are present. Do not assume every beach has a rescue station.

For an outing on land, Fazenda Bananal offers nature-related activities but states that visits require advance booking. Confirm availability for your family, age suitability, the route, price, and what happens if it rains.

Make it easy to shorten the day

Before setting out, decide where you will eat, when the group can rest, and how you will return. Bring water, necessary personal items, and a change of clothes suited to the activity.

If your child gets tired, use the shorter alternative without trying to make up the itinerary later. It is better to know what you can drop than to improvise a return from somewhere difficult to reach. In Guide listings, pay particular attention to access, facilities, and practical considerations, and confirm specific needs with the people running the outing.
