The legend
On the morning of her wedding, a young woman in Paraty was said to have been found dead in her bridal gown. After she was buried in the cemetery beside Santa Rita Church, her distraught fiancé remained in the square. That night, he saw her leave the cemetery and walk toward the drinking fountain. Before vanishing, she said she had come for water because she had died of thirst. When the grave was opened, the story goes, her body was lying face down.
Versions and context
The account changes with the teller. Some versions say the bride stopped eating and drinking so the dress would fit; others mention catalepsy and a premature burial. People also say she returned on the anniversary of the wedding, or that water from the cemetery well could help those hoping to marry. These are elements of oral tradition, not verified historical facts.
