Sugarloaf Peak in Saco do Mamanguá
From Praia do Cruzeiro, the trail climbs about 425 m over 1.5 km. It is short, very steep and ends with a broad view over the Mamanguá ria.
- 1.5 km (one way)
- About 425 m above sea level
- Ascent: usually 1–2 hours
- Difficult because of the grade
Trail and access
The trail starts at Praia do Cruzeiro, reached by boat from Paraty-Mirim. It gains about 425 m over roughly 1.5 km: the distance is short, but the continuous steep grade demands stamina. The route includes dirt, roots, rock and sections with support ropes, whose condition can change. The ascent usually takes one to two hours depending on fitness and trail conditions; allow additional time for the descent and boat logistics. From the summit, the view follows the Mamanguá inlet, its Atlantic Forest-covered shores and the mangrove at its head.
Safety
Do not start late, and avoid the climb during heavy rain or immediately after prolonged rain: dirt and rock become slippery. Wear closed shoes with good grip, carry water and sun protection, and arrange your return boat before setting out. Anyone unfamiliar with very steep trails should go with a local guide.
- Start early and allow enough time for the descent
- Carry water; do not expect supplies on the trail
- Wear closed shoes with good grip
- Do not rely on the ropes as your only support
