About the trail

Pico do Pão de Açúcar rises above Saco do Mamanguá and offers a clear view of this large tropical ria, the surrounding mountains and nearby communities. The trail is short but gains elevation quickly, with sections where hands and support ropes help with progress.

Getting to the trailhead

Access begins with a boat trip from Paraty-Mirim to Praia do Cruzeiro. Arrange both legs with a local boat operator in advance. From the community, follow the marked trail to the peak; the climb is short but very steep.

Facilities along the route

Praia do Cruzeiro has simple food and accommodation options whose availability varies. There are no facilities during the climb or at the summit; carry water and take all waste back with you.

Best time to go

Choose a dry morning with good visibility. Roots and rocks become slippery after rain, while summer heat and humidity increase the effort.

Safety

Wear shoes with good grip and keep your hands free on assisted sections. The climb is not suitable for people without adequate fitness or with limited mobility.

Local tips

Start early, agree on the return boat time and take breaks on the ascent. Boat fares and schedules vary; confirm them directly with local operators or guides.

Interesting facts

From the summit, the elongated shape of Saco do Mamanguá becomes clear: a ria surrounded by mountains, beaches and caiçara communities.

Need for a guide

A local guide is strongly recommended on a first visit, especially for anyone unfamiliar with the boat access or steep climbs. Guides in Paraty-Mirim and Mamanguá can also help arrange the boat and return time.
