Sono → Antigos → Antiguinhos → Ponta Negra Traverse
A coastal route from Praia do Sono to Ponta Negra via Antigos, Antiguinhos and Galhetas within the Juatinga Reserve.
- ~10 km (Sono → Ponta Negra)
- Low, with climbs over rocks and forest
- 2–2.5 hours without long stops
About the trail
The trail follows the coast between communities and beaches in the Juatinga Reserve, alternating sand, rocks and Atlantic Forest. It passes Antigos, Antiguinhos and Galhetas before reaching Ponta Negra. Although this is the most accessible part of the longer traverse, return logistics and weather still require planning.
Getting to the trailhead
The trail starts at Praia do Sono. Follow the coastal path toward Antigos, Antiguinhos, Galhetas and Ponta Negra. If you plan to return by boat, arrange it with a local operator in advance because service depends on sea conditions and availability.
Environment and protection
Juatinga Ecological Reserve, Cairuçu Environmental Protection Area and coastal Atlantic Forest.
Facilities along the route
Praia do Sono and Ponta Negra have simple camping and food options. Antigos, Antiguinhos and the intermediate stretches have no regular facilities; carry water and everything needed for the walk.
Best time to go
Choose a dry day with stable sea conditions. In summer, heavy rain can make rocks, roots and descents slippery; check the forecast and trail conditions.
Safety
Carry water, sun protection and shoes with good grip. Tell someone your route, avoid a late start and do not rely on phone signal throughout the walk.
Local tips
Start early and allow time for stops. Enter the sea only when conditions are safe, and confirm the return boat before leaving Praia do Sono.
Interesting facts
Juatinga's trails connect beaches and caiçara communities across a protected traditional territory. This section is part of the reserve's trail network and can continue toward Cairuçu das Pedras and Martim de Sá.
Need for a guide
A guide is not mandatory for this section, but is recommended for first-time visitors, solo hikers or anyone continuing on the full Juatinga Traverse. Signs exist at several points, but conditions can change with rain, erosion and maintenance.
Connections
- Praia do Sono (beginning)
- Ponta Negra (exit)
- Cairuçu das Pedras → Martim de Sá (extension of Juatinga)
Overall assessment
A good day route for moderately fit hikers who want to combine beaches and walking. Timing and return logistics are essential parts of the plan.
