About the trail
Pedra da Macela is the highest viewpoint in Serra da Bocaina National Park open to visitors. The route follows a very steep paved road and has no technical sections, but it demands stamina. In clear weather, the summit overlooks the Mantiqueira range, the coast and Ilha Grande Bay.
Getting to the trailhead
Follow the SP-171 highway (Paraty–Cunha Road) to around km 66.5, then take the unpaved road to the park access. After about 5 km, leave the vehicle in the parking area and continue on foot up the paved road.
Environment and protection
Serra da Bocaina National Park, in high-altitude Atlantic Forest where weather can change quickly.
Facilities along the route
There is a parking area at the park access. Check current visiting conditions and opening arrangements in advance, and do not rely on food or drinking water during the climb.
Best time to go
Choose a day with a stable forecast. Fog, rain and wind can reduce visibility and make the descent less comfortable, even in drier months.
Safety
The climb is continuous and very steep. Carry water, a light warm layer, sun protection and shoes with good grip; take extra care on the descent.
Local tips
Start early after confirming access conditions. Visibility determines the experience, so check the mountain forecast rather than only the coastal forecast.
Interesting facts
At 1,840 m, Pedra da Macela is described by ICMBio as the highest viewpoint in Serra da Bocaina National Park. On clear days, the view stretches from the Mantiqueira range to Ilha Grande Bay.
Need for a guide
Experienced walkers can follow the access road without a guide. In fog, rain or with limited mountain experience, consider local support and confirm visiting conditions with the park.
