A roughly 1 km caiçara beach reached by trail or boat, with campgrounds and access to the Juatinga coastal traverse.
- Easy/Moderate
- ~25 km + trail or boat
About the beach
Praia do Sono is a roughly 1 km beach with a traditional caiçara community, campgrounds, and direct access to the trails of the Juatinga Ecological Reserve. It can be reached by a 10–15 minute boat ride or a moderately difficult 3 km trail and lies at one end of the Juatinga coastal traverse.
How to get there
Take a municipal bus or drive to Laranjeiras. From the pier, the boat takes about 10–15 minutes; schedules and fares vary. The trail is about 3 km and usually takes 50 minutes to 1.5 hours, with steps and elevation changes.
Sea conditions
The beach is about 1 km long and faces the open sea, with moderate waves that may suit less demanding surf sessions when conditions are favorable.
On-site facilities
Campgrounds with restrooms, chalets and simple houses for rent, plus restaurants serving caiçara dishes and açaí. Electricity may be intermittent, and cell service is very weak.
Best time
April through October generally brings less rain. Summer is lively and crowded; winter is quieter and often more comfortable for hiking.
Safety and advisories
The sea can change quickly, and the trail becomes slippery in rain. With no immediate emergency response or reliable cell service, share your route and plan the return in advance.
Practical tips
If possible, plan at least two nights. Trails from Praia do Sono continue to Antigos, Antiguinhos, and Ponta Negra. Confirm the boat schedule and organize the return before setting out. Pack out all trash and respect the community.
Curiosities
The Sono community has lived off artisanal fishing for generations and is part of the Juatinga Ecological Reserve, protected by the state of RJ. It is one of the most visited points in the reserve — and the most accessible entry point for those who want to discover Juatinga.
